30 Days of Books – Day 19

Favorite Book Turned into a Movie

Chocolat by Joanne Harris

I’m trying hard not to double-up on the books I’m choosing for this meme, so A Room with a View and the newish-but-not-really-new version of Jane Eyre are out. As is Pride and Prejudice as Elizabeth Bennet has made the list. I rarely love movie versions of books (like, yes; love, no), so this was a hard one. I decided to go with I book I thought was just so-so that was turned into a movie that I really loved. Chocolat is one of those movies that I can watch over and over again, probably because Johnny Depp is pretty and Juliette Binoche is lovely and the whole story is just beautiful — even the “villian” ends up in reconcilliation and redemption. And, needless to say, it’s overflowing with chocolate. Bonus.

A Book that Disappointed You

Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

I’d heard a lot of good things about this writing duo from many of my book blogging friends (especially about Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), so when this showed up as a book club read, I was all for it. Let me tell you…Dis. A. Point. Ment. I really hated all the selfish characters. I found few redeeming qualities in any of them. Why root for someone who would drive you crazy in real life? The writing was sometimes good, most of the time overwraught and it felt like it was trying to hard. I want to give Cohn and Levithan another shot based on friends’ reviews, but it’s going to be tough to make me pick up another book of theirs. (Read my full review here.)

30 Days of Books – Day 17

Hey! Remember this! I forgot I was doing the 30 Days of Books. Back to it!

This is a 30 Days of Books entry.

Your Favorite Quote from Your Favorite Book

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller

My highlighting in my copy book is ridiculous. Here is one of my favorite lines:

“And once you live a good story, you get a taste for a kind of meaning in life, and you can’t go back to being normal; you can’t go back to meaningless scenes stitched together by the forgettable thread of wasted time.”

My favorite quote of all time, however, comes from CS Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: “‘Then he isn’t safe?’ asked Lucy. ‘Safe?’ said Mr. Beaver. ‘Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.’”

30 Days of Books — Day 16

Your Favorite Female Character

Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice

Mr Darcy didn’t quite make the cut, but Elizabeth Bennet does! What is it about Elizabeth that resonates within so many women’s souls? I think it’s because we are Elizabeth Bennet. We are smart. We are witty. We are opinionated. We are couragegous. We are a little insecure. We get hit on by losers. We have crazy families. We would have the greatest love or none at all. And, let’s face it, we think Colin Firth is hot.

Your Favorite Male Character

Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird

The obvious choice here is Mr. Darcy, yes? But as much as I love him, he’s kind of a jerk for most of Pride and Prejudice. SO, I chose Atticus Finch instead.

Anyone who has read To Kill a Mockingbird probably understands why this man ranks first on my list of favorites. He’s more than a father, a lawyer, and a good man. He’s an absolute hero. Even thinking about the integrity and sacrifice he makes on behalf of Tom and black community in racially charged Alabama gets me choked up every time. Harper Lee has created this icon of justice and resiliency against all odds — if you haven’t read TKaM, please do yourself a favor and find out for yourself why Atticus Finch is one of the greatest male characters of all time.
