I Want It [Wednesday]

So for Wednesdays when I can’t find random book-related item that I want, I think I’ll feature a book that I found on someone else’s blog. My to-read list is ridiculously long, but there’s always great books to add to it!

Today I want…

The Pericles Commission by Gary Corby

Recommended by: S. Krishna. She rated it 4.5 / 5. Also, if you don’t RSS her, you should. Her book blog is top notch!
Publisher: Minitaur Books
Pages: 352

Synopsis (from Publisher’s Weekly): Starred Review. Those who like their historicals with a touch of humor will welcome Australian author Corby’s promising debut, set in fifth-century B.C.E. Greece. When the arrow-pierced body of Ephialtes, the main force behind democratic reform in Athens, literally falls at the feet of Nicolaos, a sculptor’s son expected to follow in his father’s footsteps, fate hands Nicolaos another career. Ephialtes’s politician friend, Pericles, who appears on the scene moments after the murder, is impressed enough by Nicolaos’s preliminary conclusions to hire him to solve the crime. Members of the Areopagus, the city’s ruling council, had the most to lose from Ephialtes’s policies, but the neophyte detective finds that not even his exalted employer is above suspicion. The bodies pile up as the investigation continues, leading to a dramatic climax in which Nicolaos’s survival hinges on his cracking the mystery. Corby displays a real gift for pacing and plotting.

Conclusion: Greece! Mysteries! Bodies! Yes—this is something I should love!

I Want It [Wednesday]

Technically this is I Have It [Wednesday], but I thought that You Might Want It [Wednesday].

For a while now, I’ve been getting this really strange pain in my left thumb and forefinger. I’m right-handed, and I couldn’t figure out what was making my left hand cramp up. I thought it might be using the space bar, but if you look at my computer, I’ve actually worn down a spot where my right thumb hits the space bar — so that’s not it. It was a mystery. And a fairly painful mystery at that.

I finally realized that I generally hold a book with my left hand. This leaves my right hand free to stuff pretzels and the like into my mouth. If I used my left hand for the pretzels, my uncoordination might cause me to stab myself in the eye with one of the salty sticks.

Then I remembered I had a Thumb Thing:

The Thumb Thing makes holding a book in one hand more comfortable. It’s a little awkward at first, but I’ve gotten used to it. The pain in my thumb has gone down considerably (I’ve also made a point to use my right hand for books more). AND, mine is green, so it’s all St. Patty’s Day-ish.

I Want It [Wednesday]

I’ve decided that I want to take a painting class. That’s something to want on a Wednesday, right? I have an art minor from college, but I haven’t used it anything much but interior decorating (my curtains are SO cute) since then. I’m interested in encaustic painting in particular, which is painting with colored beeswax and resin. I love how much depth the paintings can have, and many have this floaty, ethereal feel.

And, luckily, there is a one-day encaustic painting class available in May at our Learning Exchange. Win!

Here is some work I found on the web of pieces I absolutely love (seriously, right?):

“Midnight Garden” by Robin Denevan

“Junebug” by Callie Grayson

 ”The Great Awakening” by newbyart

I Want It [Wednesday]

I was trying to find something completely unrelated to this post, when I ran across this:

Forget New Car Smell. This is Old Paperback Smell! Why smell like a Hyundai when you can smell of rich mahogany and leather-bound books? From the seller: Now your whole home can smell of books with this atmosphere spray from The Demeter Fragrance Library. Smells just like an English satire from the 1970s — sweet, timeless, and only very slightly musty. Simple, subtle, and original.

I’d bet it is!

I Want It [Wednesday]

A while back, my friend Steve sent me a link to these awesome bookends:

I love how industrial and solid they feel, like they could hold up miles of books. They are tough and, let’s face it, could be used as a weapon if needed. Not that I’d ever get them. First of all, they are $89. Dang. Second of all, my shelves are so full that bookends are useless. Books go from one end of each shelf to the other. Still, I can dream of the day when my library is big enough to warrant these fabulous bookends.
